Law

Institutions commonly try to tap into the collective consciousness to come up with fair solutions to social problems.

We have a right to trial by jury in the U.S. The jury assesses the facts of a case and applies the law to those facts impartially. Lawyers can exclude persons from the jury pool whom they believe can not be objective.

The jury does its best to think like the entire community to come up with a standard of conduct and measure out fair solutions and punishments.

Juries are frequently asked to apply a "reasonable man" standard for determining whether someone should have been more careful by society or community standards. This reasonable man would be a person conceived of by the collective consciousness free of individual biases.

Philosophy

The collective consciousness holds our capacity for valuing human conduct, which forms the basis for our judgments of things as good or bad.

One of the most influential philosophers of all time, John Rawls, believed that justice could not operate except behind a "veil of ignorance" where individuals form a community to determine justice as if ignorant of their own places in society's hierarchy.

Behind that veil of ignorance, all people are free of bad faith competitive strategies but are allowed to judge the value of things. Only that kind of a contract, where everyone is equal, would produce principles of justice.

Rawls considered this veil of ignorance to be a natural condition for overall society and pointed to its importance as the foundation for other important philosophical theories, such as utilitarianism. In that philosophy, the value of a thing is defined by the amount of happiness or avoidance of pain it brings to the most people.

This veil of ignorance is the way to think about how the collective consciousness determines what your fair share of global prosperity should be. When you tap into the collective consciousness seeking economic prosperity, you get the same opportunity as everyone else to display your economic value.

The more value you can provide -- the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people -- the more value there is associated to your contribution to society, and the more globaly prosperity you can acquire. You are rewarded free of flawed individual biases and personal distastes.

Inventors understand the power of the collective consciousness in the way that they market-test products to determine demand before they spend money on production.

What inventors are looking for is a way to survey the collective mind to determine how much value they would be contributing to society with their invention, and what their share of global prosperity would be if they invented it. However, market testing is difficult when predicting global prosperity because a small test group is never evenly distributed across society.

Religion

There are some in the world who believe that collective consciousness is a way in which God manifests his presence on Earth. We are all still joined together by one force -- the collective consciousness -- despite our inability to "remember" this superior state of being. This theory is in alignment with philosophical belief in the purity of the collective mind over the flawed individual version.

All of these fields of study show that collective thinking has a powerful impact on each of our lives. The lesson may be unsettling: despite our individual liberties, we are not completely in control. We do indeed have a collective master to serve.
